People ask for "cheap and best,": apparently without realizing that the two seldom go together. I agree that, between Immigration, Customs and transportation to BUR, you won't be there close to 8:30. Avis, Hertz, and National are on the grounds of the airport though I read they are now at a centralized location on the edge of the airport, not any longr next to the terminal. I assume that you're renting a car from an airport rental location at BUR but at one of the companies (e.g., Budget, Enterprise) not located on the grounds of the airport (you take a shuttle). This entire transfer would cost about $13 per person and would take about as long as a 'shared van' but would be more complicated (but a lot cheaper). It's a walk of about 8 minutes to the terminals or there is a shuttle bus that will transfer you (I don't know if it goes to the car park for the hire cars). The train station at BUR is on the edge of the tiny airport. Tickets are between $3.50 and $5.50 each and the ride takes 25-30 minutes. Re-enter the tunnel, find the track and climb the stairs to it.
